The mouse

Do thisAnd the board…
Scroll (or pinch on a trackpad)Zooms in and out around the pointer
Drag the empty canvasDraws a selection box: everything it touches is selected
Hold Space and drag, or drag with the middle buttonPans around the board
ClickSelects: a glowing ring, and everything unconnected fades
⌘-click (Ctrl-click on Windows)Adds to the selection, or takes away from it
Double-clickOpens it in the side panel: details for an asset or finding, the thread for a hypothesis
Right-clickEverything you can do with it, or on the empty canvas at that spot
Drag a nodeMoves it; a finding keeps the spot you give it
Drag from a portDraws a link; see Lines & links

With the Pan tool (H), every drag pans and nothing can be picked up by accident. That’s handy on a crowded board.

Zoom levels

The board changes what it draws as you zoom, so it stays readable at every distance:

LevelZoomWhat you see
Full detail60% and moreEverything: finding labels, the words along lines, whole hypothesis cards with their tally
Shapes and names30% to 60%Assets and findings with bigger names; finding labels and the words along lines are hidden (point at a line to read it); cards show their statement
Overviewunder 30%Compact chips with large names; every asset folds its findings into a ring of severity colours; badges are hidden

The same corner of a board at each level:

Full detail: everything, including the words along the lines.
Shapes and names: finding labels and line words are hidden; the card shows its statement.
Overview: the asset folds its findings into a ring of severity colours; the card becomes a chip.

Every demo on these pages shows its level in the bottom-left corner. Use the − and + buttons to watch it change.

Fitting and jumping

ControlKeyWhat it does
Fit board⇧1Zooms to show the whole board
Zoom to selection⇧2Zooms to what you selected
Mini-mapA small overview of the whole board; drag its frame to jump
Show on boardIn panels and search results, flies to the item and makes it pulse briefly

Search and actions (⌘K)

The search box in the top bar (or ⌘K, Ctrl K on Windows) does three jobs at once: find things on the board, find things anywhere in your data and add them, and run actions.

ScopeFinds
AllThe best few of each kind, from the board and from your data, plus matching actions
BoardEvidence, findings, hypotheses, notes, frames and comments on this board; choose one to fly to it
CorpusAssets and findings anywhere in your data; choose one to add it to the board. Things already on the board are tagged on board
ActionsNew note, new hypothesis, new frame; open the timeline, leads, case file, evidence table or hypotheses; tidy up; add evidence with filters

Press Tab to switch scope, ↑ ↓ to move, Enter to open or add, and Esc to close. If what you need calls for filters, Search ”…” with filters… opens the Add evidence panel with your words already typed.

Selecting, spotlighting and focusing

Four ways to cut a busy board down to what matters. Only one is active at a time:

HowWhat stays lit
SelectionClick something, or drag a boxIt and everything directly connected to it (frames stay, as context)
SpotlightClick a counter in the top bar: evidence, findings, hypothesesEverything of that kind
Hypothesis focusClick a hypothesis cardThe hypothesis, its stance lines and the evidence they point to
Highlight byView → Highlight byOne source, one detector, one hypothesis, or only highlighted items

Esc unwinds one step at a time: it cancels a tool, a spotlight, an edit, a focus or a selection first. When nothing is left on the canvas, it closes the side panel. Press . to lock a hypothesis focus so that clicks elsewhere leave it alone.

On Windows and Linux, read Ctrl for ⌘.

Press ? on the board at any time for the shortcuts and visual key: every shortcut, and a key to every line, ring and badge. It is also in the More menu.

Undo and redo

Every change you make on the board is one step you can take back: moving things, adding and removing evidence, links, stances, notes, tidy-up, and more. The Undo button’s tooltip names the step (Undo: Move 3 items). Undo only takes back your own changes, never a teammate’s.
